The Ugly Tourist by Jamaica Kincaid
Delores Prescott
July,25,2014
Jamaica kincaid was born in Antiqua, WestIndies , she is writing about about an unfortunate time in history of slavery and the invention of the indentured servant in her island as the British and The Europeans came in and colonized her island and treating her people with inferiority and abuse . This form of slavery continues to exists today .
Her purpose in this article is to show the injustice performed to her people from these same prepetrators and how this sense of exploitation can be changed with the American tourist coming to her island with a different view and expectation, by coming to aid a hand of help to these people , instead of the continued abuse as her ancestors endured.
Her main claim of this article is showing the american tourists leaving their habitat and their humdrum, lonely life and coming to the island to be served and to be noticed in their sense of superiority and to scoff at the natives simple and poor lifestyle.
Her target audience is the affluent, middle class americans who is able to travel out as they can finacially able to afford to do so.
Kincaid is writing this article from an emotional appeal to arouse the human empathy and sympathy from her targeted audience and to educate her fellow Antiquans of their intended reasons
for them being there . She describes the loneliness of these to be tourists as they live in their own habitat , their need for acknowledgement and recognition .As a n ugly tourist leaves all the nice things here in their world , the nice house , all the people they love and who loves them, to go to an island of low economic standard and knowingly, whose livelihood totally depends on them,
being there as a tourist with their money and all it can buy .These tourists go into the island and stare at the
normal occurrences where they squat to have a bowel movement as if it is something to "marvel at" and sees it as a failure and backwardness of the island .
Kincaid goes on to state that there is no sense of affection between the natives and the tourists, as they really do not like each other . The natives see themselves as inferior and is there to serve and the tourists see themselves as receiving Rest and relaxation and being served . The tourists is achieving their need to escape their otherwise overwhelming boredom and depression from their every day lifestle, at the expense of these natives who also can benefit to get away from their daily drudge of service, but is unable to do so because of their state of poverty .
Kincaid concludes that every native is a potential tourist and everyone will like to, from time to time go to another habitat and live like and be a tourist .To be served and to have that time to rest and relaxed . However , some of us like her fellow Antiquan's is unable to experience such a luxury due to a state of indigence . She continues to express , that because of this, the natives does not necessarily like the tourist because they are un able to have something they long to have , which in most case, is taken for granted and abused through the sense of obliviousness and selfcentredness .

The Singer solution to World Poverty
Singer uses emotional blackmail to appeal to his readers by using guilt and condemnation .
He forces his readers to make a chioce : the life of a young child in a third world country or the continuation of living an affluent lifestyle of vacations , new clothes and dining out .
He refers to his character Bob 's choice to save his Bogatti vintage car over saving the life of a child being ran down by a train , as the normal American reaction . He invokes guilt, by condemning the normal actions of eating out in restaurants and buying a new suit as unnecessary . He says why do we need these extras , when a child' s life is at risk .
Singer continue to appeal to his writer's sense of whats really is the right and wrong thing to do by using the example of a woman's realization to return the money for a child she sold, after she found out the child was going to be used as an organ donor . He adds, that even though we see this woman's act as a moral gesture , by we not contributing to the different organizations that supports these countries , we are encouraging the people who buys and sells these organ . This makes us just as bad a person .
Singer went on to say that we need to donate 10% of our income to this cause, as the decent human thing to do . We at least need to donate at least $200. which is the cost to save one child's life .
He adds to the human guilt by including the numbers of the organizations that collects and supports these countries. We have no excuse . We are now informed , so whats stopping the American citizen from donating and being better than those who looked aside from the" Nazi Atrocites" .
He continues to attack the american citizen moral values to say if all american did their part and respond financially to this world crisis of saving lives , he and those who do, will not have to make such large sacrifices .
Silver clearly, impacts his readers to maybe take time to do some self evaluation of their livestyle and to question if going out to dinner or taking that well deserved vacation or buying that new suit is more important than saving a life ? Should we as Americans be so concerned with all of the world crisis , albeit poverty , prostitution , freedom to learn etc and allow our way of living to deteriorate, by depriving ourselves of some of the aforementioned luxuries, that does contribute to a healthy mind and body ?

Salvation
In the article 'salvation,'Langston Hughes writes about his struggles with his belief in Jesus Christ. He was told that when he became saved ,he will feel different ,that he will see a light and he will hear and see Jesus.
During a lengthy church service ,his aunt and the congregation became engaged in long moments of
prayers and songs , a way ,they said to get the teenagers saved.. Most of the teenagers claiimed they received salvation , except for Langston and another boy called Wesley .
Wesley later expressed his fatigue during the continuation of prayers and songs and told Langston , he is going to lie and say he is saved and so he did . Langston later looked at Wesley and the other teenagers and saw them superciliously sitting on the platform and realizing he was the only one at the altar in forbearance .
He looked at wesley and noted he was not struck down dead for his untruth , so he decided he was going to do the same ; he has had enough ; he stood up and lied ,claiming he received salvation ; his aunt and the congregation became quite elated and began to rejoice because the last lamb was saved.;through all this , he felt abandoned and betrayed , he no longer believe in Jesus existence . Jesus did not come for him . That night he began to sob, which was viewed by his aunty as his reaction of having received salvation . Marinading in his conscience , he came to the mortifying realization that he defrauded his aunty and his church .
Langston was left with the abyss of his early belief , possible a moment of a life change .
In our secular society , it is believed that salvation is a gift , it is not earned and it is not deserved ,
it cannot be coerced or forced .To receive salvation one has to believe that Jesus Christ exist and that he is alive ;he is the giver of salvation based on one's belief and faith in him . Salvation is sought by the individual who have a relationship with Christ .
Langston will never really know if Jesus Christ really exist until he again believe . His aunt will be
greatly disappointed not only to know he was deceitful , but also that he no longer believe that Christ exists and that he did not really receive the Holy Ghost in his life : an expectation she had for him .

My favourite song
Life has not been the same color without her .Her strngth as a woman inspired me to always be my best , she will always tell me , ' you can do anything , just believe .'
My mom gave birth and raised ten children , an accomplishment I venerate her for , but will not dare to aspire to , she was the matriach of her dynasty . She managed and ran our hosehold with love and loyalty , she made dad's meager salary looked like millions , We never had need for anything , we always had enough to eat and adequate clothing to wear . She made sure we received all of life's bare essentials .
I never heard my mom complain through the drudgery of her day of multitasking , cleaning , cooking bakingand caring for us ;
her face always shone with a smile , her eyes glittered like the stars and she always hummed a song . I always felt so long I had my mom , everything was ok .
While going through nursing school , I cleaned offices at night to help me with my expenses , my mom was right there with me . pushing that vacuum cleaner and slopping that mop. She was always there.
The song ', A song For mama', spoke all my thoughts and feelings as to how I felt about my mom, I pray I told her enough how much I loved her and I pray I showed her my appreciation for all she has done and given me , a haunting thought .
Today I love my son with all of me, as my mother showed and taught me , I hope he loves me and sees me as the' queen of his heart ' i promise to always be there for him and to teach him, he can do all things if he only believe , to teach him to be loved and to love .
Today I am the woman I am because of the mother I had , she will always be in my heart ; I continue to hear her say , strive on my daughter , strive to be your best . Oh mama I love you , You will always be my hero !..
